Towards the Sun is an Austrian- German television series about four dropouts who move to Yugoslavia . The series was shot from 1984 to 1985 in Valun , a fishing village on the island of Cres in Croatia . Two seasons of six episodes each were produced.

action

The Hamburg gas station owner Hannes Meckelfeld can no longer bear his arguing wife and her mother and runs away. In Valun, a small fishing village in what was then Yugoslavia , he met the overwhelmed lawyer Dr. Know Günter Zack, who is dissatisfied with his work, also the painter Joe Felden, who paints pictures for the Munich crowd and earns a lot of money with them, but realizes that he is no longer a serious painter, and finally the Viennese café owner Ludwig Hawratil, who terrorized by protection rackets.

The four dropouts enjoy doing nothing. When they run out of money, they decide to get an old boat back on the beach. This belongs to old Luka, but he gives them permission to use it for messenger services. They christen the ship with the name Tohuwabohu . From now on they live from deliveries for Mirko, the melon dealer and from other odd jobs, some of which bring more money, some less. Since Joe wants to paint again and goes into the mountains, the twelve-year-old fisher boy Duško becomes the new member of the crew. Towards the end of the first season, Mecki's wife Gisela and his mother-in-law Käthe arrive in Valun. Mecki and his wife fall in love again and enjoy the time together.

At the beginning of the second season, the Meckelfelds and Joe , who are back in Germany , come back to Valun on vacation. The nervous writer Georg Lüftl comes to Valun so that he is no longer constantly disturbed while writing and to be inspired. Käthe wants to open a small restaurant and the host of Valun decides to open a disco in the village. A newspaper writer wrote an article about the town of Valun, which was overrun by tourists . Now it is over with the tranquility and tranquility in the small town. The friends move on on their boat.

Backgrounds and locations

View of Valun

The series deals with dropouts in a humorous way. Some of the actors were already well-known actors at that time, such as Josef Meinrad , Heidi Kabel , Heinz Petters or Towje Kleiner . For Erwin Steinhauer , however, the great success as an actor came through the series. He has since acted in numerous television films and series. He celebrated successes with the Polt and Trautmann series, among others . The child actor Harald Gauster , who played the role of Duško and had previously become known in Austria through series such as Waldheimat and Tatort , then no longer appeared in television productions.

The shooting took place in Valun, in the town of Cres , in Lubenice , the hometown of the character Alter Luka, and in Mali Lošinj on the island of Lošinj . The rocky island with the lighthouse in episode 9 is Otok Zaglav. The boat Tohuwabohu from the 1940s has not survived. It was used in the regular service between Cres and Valun until 1993 and then until 1999 as a tour boat in the port of Mali Losinj. After all, it was in poor condition in the port of Cres, where it sank in 2003 and was sawn up and disposed of after being salvaged.

DVD publications

In November 2007 the first and in June 2008 the second season went on sale (two DVDs each). In December 2010 and again in December 2015 complete boxes of all 12 episodes consisting of four DVDs were released. All publications were made by Hoanzl GmbH.

criticism

"The dropouts" in the series surf and drink, sail and mate each other through the special leave and you already know that in the end, quite relaxed, they will return to their home. However , this production is better than the " dream ship ". "
