The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich is the title of a biopic about Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957), the Austrian psychoanalyst , Marxists and later founder of a pseudoscience applicable orgonomy . However, only the last section of his life, which he spent in exile in the United States from 1939 to 1957, is discussed. Directed by Antonin Svoboda plays Klaus Maria Brandauer the lead role . The film was completed in autumn 2012, then went straight to Austrian cinemas, only from September 5, 2013 in German cinemas.
action
The film begins with an opening credits in which Reich gave a lecture to a gathering of psychoanalytic colleagues, including Sigmund Freud , in Vienna in the mid-1920s . He is committed to expressing his view of the social dimension of the problem of mass neuroses, but meets with little approval, rather rejection and cautious hostility. The real action begins when Reich settled in the United States in 1940.
background
The original title of the film, which was shot and dubbed in English despite the majority of German-speaking actors, is The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich. It goes back to a so-titled article by journalist Mildred Edie Brady from 1947, which Reich viewed as the beginning of the long-running campaign against him that traces Svoboda's film. While it was being made, the film was announced as The Boundary Man . Finally he got the title (shortened by the word “strange” / “strange” in German). The English-language (original) version was shown in smaller events, for example at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London or at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival in summer 2013.
Svoboda previously had a 95-minute TV documentary Who is Afraid of Wilhelm Reich? produced, which includes the entire life of the empire.
reception
The film received extraordinary media attention, largely thanks to the fact that the Reich actor Brandauer was 70 years old when it appeared in Germany in the summer of 2013 and therefore gave numerous interviews in whom he was asked about this film, the first after a long break from shooting.
The film was nominated for the Austrian Film Awards 2014 in the categories of Best Male Actor (Klaus Maria Brandauer), Best Costume Design ( Tanja Hausner ), Best Mask (Sam Dopona), Best Music (Bernd Jungmair and Stefan Jungmair) and Best Production Design ( Katharina Wöppermann ) but did not receive any of the awards.
