content

The Anderlfabrik in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel is about to close in 2004. Where once more than 200 people worked, only a few have remained. When the factory finally closes, Nikolaus Geyrhalter accompanies the former employees in their reorientation. In an area where new jobs are rare, finding new work requires above all flexibility. Some manage to get one of the rare jobs, while others really thrive with the additional free time of unemployment. Geyrhalter asks the protagonists how they are, accompanies them on their hobbies and documents the paths people can take when they are unemployed. Geyrhalter creates a film about people and work and survival in the post-industrial age.

Reviews

Over the years it has been received positively by the critics. Despite, or perhaps because of, the long running time of the documentary, the report seems to have been successful for an entire decade. “ Over the years , with a running time of three hours, it has become an epic and delicate draft about the flow of time, about the unpredictability of life and the concept of work as proof of identity and substitute act.”, Writes Stefan Grissemann from Profil . Time and the importance of work are the two big issues. “Geyrhalter is not looking for the extraordinary or the drama, even if that occurs in the lives of his protagonists, instead his film tells of everyday life, of repetitions of the same things that ultimately make a life just as much as the major turning points. Time goes on as long as one is alive. Circumstances change, a lot remains, ”says Hendrike Bake at the Berlinale. The passage of time is a decisive stylistic device in this film. The film editor Wolfgang Widerhofer , who was awarded the editing prize for documentary film, is the one who ultimately combines Geyrhalter's material into what can be seen in the cinema. “Geyrhalter's long-time editor and dramaturge Wolfgang Widerhofer condensed and rhythmized all the scattered material that came together over a decade into a gently developing large narrative. The spectacle has a break in this film. There are more important things to show. "
