action

Anton lives and works together with his blind father Karl in an Art Nouveau indoor swimming pool threatened by decay . Karl is the lifeguard , Anton the assistant. Together with the employee Martha, they simulate a flourishing bathing business for Karl by simulating a corresponding background noise with a tape recorder . One of the few visitors is the former captain Gustav. One day when he takes his daughter Eva into the bathroom, Anton falls in love with her.

Meanwhile, Anton's brother Gregor is planning to demolish the indoor pool as he is planning new buildings in the area. To force the bath to close, he throws a stone through the crumbling ceiling, fatally injuring Gustav. The police are investigating the accident and an inspector finds a number of defects in the bathroom. He gives Anton three days to repair the damage. Gregor pretends to support the family, but in reality he has no ambitions to save the bathroom.

Eva inherits an old cargo ship from her father and finds a map of the Pacific island of Tuvalu in his estate . To get to Tuvalu by ship, however, she has to restart the old steam engine below deck . Unfortunately, you are missing an important spare part . However, this is available in the heating system of the indoor pool. Eva - who thinks Anton is to blame for her father's death - steals the required part after a fight with Anton. However, Anton follows her onto the ship and can retrieve the part.

In order for the second inspection to take place in his favor, Gregor assaults the policeman, knocks him down and takes on his role. When the policeman comes to and realizes that he is not wearing a uniform, he overpowers the inspector and slips into his role. In the meantime, Anton has commissioned several homeless people to pretend that the deficiencies have been remedied. The fake inspector recognizes the deception, but goes into the game. Gregor angrily shows his father the tape recorder. He just laughs about it, obviously it had long been clear to him that he was being deceived. When Gregor humiliates his father again, he dies of a heart attack . Eva realizes that Gregor is also guilty of her father's death. Anton, Eva and the homeless manage to save the steam engine from the indoor pool before Gregor destroys it with a wrecking ball . Anton and Eva say goodbye to Martha and the homeless and set off with the ship.
