Bolinas is a census-designated place in Marin County , California , about 13 miles northwest of San Francisco as the crow flies on the California Pacific coast. The place has 1620 inhabitants (2010 census), but no mayor and no town hall. The residents of the place are described as "hippies, dropouts and eccentrics".

history

Bolinas is  surrounded by water on three sides by Bolinas Bay , Bolinas Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean . As a result of the collision of two oil tankers, Bolinas Lagoon was heavily contaminated with oil in 1971. To combat the oil pollution , many environmental activists came to Bolinas, of whom a not insignificant number settled permanently in the village.

The remote location is known nationwide for its public-shy residents, who have dismantled all signposts on Highway 1 for decades in order to prevent an influx of tourists. In a vote from 1989, the residents voted by a large majority in favor of maintaining this condition. A moratorium on new water meters has also been in force since the 1970s, which is intended to prevent the construction of new houses and thus the arrival of strangers.

In 2003, Bolinas residents hit the headlines when they voted on a petition from Jane 'Dakar' Blethen that the press described as "incomprehensible". Blethen, who paints her face with chocolate, describes herself as an artist and lived for a long time in the bushes around the place, had made the demand, “Bolinas should be a socially recognized, nature-loving city, because the water from the lakes Loving blueberries and bears does not mean hating hotels and motorboats. Dakar. Temporarily and to save life, skunks and foxes (planes over the ocean) and for beautification. ”The press suspected that the residents of Bolinas finally agreed to the measure so as not to endanger their own karma and because apparently through acceptance of the petition could not cause any harm.

The 3.6 km² settlement area of Bolinas belonged to Rancho Las Baulines . In 1981 Ernest Callenbach described in his novel Ecotopia Emerging the model of society that organizes itself in an ecologically and socially responsible manner. He also reported on Bolinas.
