Ernst Epstein
Ernst Epstein (born January 4, 1881 in Vienna ; † May 21, 1938 there ) was an Austrian architect .
Life
Ernst Epstein was of Jewish origin and the son of the owner of a "gas and water supply system" Max Epstein and his wife Johanna Kantor. He graduated from the state trade school in 1900 with the Matura, but then did not study, but took the master builder examination in 1906, after a few years of practical experience . From then on he was self-employed and ran his own master builder with great success. He erected around 100 buildings in Vienna. In 1903 Epstein resigned from the Israelite religious community. During the First World War he served in the military construction department, initially for a year in Lemberg , then in Vienna. In 1924 Epstein married Melanie Hügel, b. King. His wife died on February 21, 1936. The marriage remained childless. The very wealthy widower committed suicide with veronal in 1938, shortly after Austria was annexed to the German Reich . He left a fortune of around 800,000 Reichsmarks, which corresponds to around 3 million euros, and bequeathed it to living relatives and Israelite organizations according to his will of December 25, 1937. By order of the National Socialist administration, Epstein was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery , Israelite Department.
meaning
As an architect, Ernst Epstein was at home in all common architectural styles, which he used with great adaptability according to customer requirements. At the beginning of his career he mainly built residential and commercial buildings in the Secessionist style, which were alternately supplemented by older designs. Under the influence of Adolf Loos , his buildings became objectified. In the 1920s, Epstein built numerous villas that met the representational needs of their owners. On the housing program the City of Vienna Epstein was not involved, but the influence of the "Viennese municipal-style" from the year 1928 is not to be mistaken when he returned to the residential building of villas from.
Epstein's buildings, which are characterized by solid technical building skills and meet the functional requirements, are harmoniously balanced, have a representative character and always fit into the surrounding architecture. Most famous was his participation in Looshaus as a construction manager, as well as the construction of the administration building of the Phönix insurance on Otto-Wagner-Platz 5 in Vienna- Alsergrund .

Vienna 5, Schloßgasse 14 location |
The business building Bothe und Ehrmann was built by Ernst Epstein in 1912/1913. The business area is accentuated by post structures and laterally inserted columns, but the residential area above is braced with the business area by the deepening of the side axes. The facade has neoclassical relief decoration. The original gates have been preserved, entrances, lift grilles and the vestibule cladding were reconstructed in 1983. In the media, this building is nicknamed the Epstein House. |
