The Frankhplatz located on the southern edge of the Alser reason , the 9th district of the Austrian capital Vienna ; its south side borders on the 8th district, the Josefstadt . The square was opened in 1935 after the imperial council Dr. Josef Frankh, who in 1686 made land available in this area for the construction of a large poor house.

history

The area of Frankhplatz and the Otto-Wagner-Platz adjoining to the north and west belonged to the formerly independent Alservorstadt . The landscape academy of the Lower Austrian Estates, which was built from 1685 and completed in 1689, was located here, consisting of a main building, living rooms, a chapel, rooms for physical exercises, a riding hall and stables for 40 horses as well as a garden. The institute was attended by pupils from the most prestigious circles in Austria. In 1730 the building received a new facade.

Courtyard of the Alser barracks, around 1900

After the academy was closed in 1749 and sold to the court chamber in 1751, the estate landscape academy was demolished and the Alser barracks built in its place by 1753 . This covered about 27,000 m² and consisted of one large and six smaller courtyards; the buildings had three floors. It was occupied by parts of the Baron Kheilyschen infantry regiment and held about 6000 men. In the barracks there was a military vehicle depot, a riding school, Catholic and Protestant garrison bands and a military hospital. Immediately in front of the barracks was the vacant glacis that was used for drills. In 1850, the Alservorstadt was incorporated into Vienna and the former glacis was largely built. In 1909 the City of Vienna took over the building and tore it down in 1912.

In 1913, planning began for the construction of the Austrian National Bank building , but it was not realized in the dimensions originally planned. The space that remained vacant has been called Alser Platz since 1925 . The name, which is still valid today, was used during the dictatorship.

With the construction of the Frankhplatz underground station, which began in 2019, there will be a traffic-related upgrading of the square, which is currently only known to a few locals. The provisional terminus of the U5 will be built here, which will later be extended to the northwest.

Location and characteristics

Frankhplatz is between Alser Straße , Garelligasse and Haulerstraße on the district border with Josefstadt . In the middle there is a row of trees, to the north of it a small traffic area mainly used for parking and to the southwest of it the busy Alser Straße with cycle lanes and the tracks of the trams 43 and 44 connects to the square. Frankhplatz is unattractive for pedestrians, as it doesn't invite you to linger anywhere.

Frankhplatz to the east

The construction consists of large, representative buildings that were built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. They are stylistically inconsistent. In reality, Frankhplatz is not recognizable as an independent traffic area and is mostly viewed as the beginning of Alser Straße on the city center side.

Buildings

Cornerstone of freedom

Cornerstone of Freedom (1950)

The inconspicuous memorial stone, which commemorates the American occupation period 1945–1955 in Vienna, stands in the green of the square (see here ). Here was the border of the Vienna US occupation sector, while the American headquarters (Headquarters United States Forces in Austria, USFA) was stationed in the nearby building of the National Bank. In March 1950 the Americans dedicated this memorial stone to Austria. Its English inscription is translated into German:

"Austria's importance for Western civilization far exceeds the geographic size of the country, whose contributions to the field of art and literature are well known, as well as its achievements in medical and natural history. Austria's scientists have been instrumental in the development of technical progress Austria can truly be called the heart of the European community. Bedford, Indiana, USA, June 17, 1948 ".

The inscription is on a metal plate mounted on the stone. It comes from the quarry in Bedford, Indiana . It is a gray limestone . Such a stone was donated to another 16 states at that time, as a "symbol of freedom and solidarity between the United States and all freedom-loving peoples".

No. 1: Regional Court

The south side of Frankhplatz in the 8th district completely occupies the long north side facade of the regional court for criminal matters (main front: Landesgerichtsstrasse ). This monumental building was built by Johann Fischer from 1831 to 1839 in place of the bourgeois shooting range. It shows the influence of Peter von Nobile and emphasizes the function of the house in its decor. From 1873 to 1878, the wing was expanded to include the large jury court on Alser Strasse and today's Frankhplatz. In 1905 the house was increased by one floor.

The building, in which numerous trials, including political ones, were carried out, was also the place of execution. The last execution took place here on March 24, 1950. A memorial commemorates this practice.

No. 2: Suspenders House

The colloquially so-called residential building Garnisongasse 1 / Universitätsstrasse 12 / Frankhplatz 2, prominently located in the line of sight at the end of Landesgerichtsstrasse , was built in 1888 by Otto Wagner . It is a free-standing, cubic building with six floors and a protruding eaves cornice . The facades are divided into pilaster strips , the decor condenses upwards. The south-facing address Universitätsstrasse 12 is to be regarded as the front of the house, although there is no entrance there. On the side fronts there are niche figures, on the east-facing front at Garnisongasse 1 Venus , on Frankhplatz 2 facing west Pallas Athene . At Garnisongasse 1 is the Baroque-style Ädikulaportal with wrought iron bars. The house is a listed building .

No. 3: Financial Market Authority

The office building was built between 1928 and 1929 by Ernst Epstein for the Phoenix Insurance Company. From 1957 to 1958, Carl Appel adapted the house by adding several meeting rooms to the general management of OMV ; since 2011 it has been the seat of the financial market supervisory authority . The six-storey building on an irregular floor plan has a striking stepped cornice and a risalit protruding far towards Frankhplatz .
