Peter von Nobile (born October 11, 1774 in Campestro (Switzerland) as Pietro Nobile ; † November 7, 1854 in Vienna ) was a Swiss - Austrian architect and court builder .

life and work

Peter von Nobile is considered one of the leading architects of late classicism in Vienna. He took lessons in Rome and Trieste with Antonio Canova and in 1819 became director of the architecture department at the Vienna Academy . His main works in Vienna include the Outer Burgtor on Heldenplatz and the Theseus Temple, built in the Volksgarten between 1819 and 1823 . In addition, after Nobile's plans, the Graz playhouse was rebuilt after its fire in 1823 and the ballroom of the kk polytechnic institute (now the main building of the Vienna University of Technology ) was completed in 1842 .

Another important place of activity was the Austrian port city of Trieste , where he built Palazzo Costanzi in 1817 and the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo in Borgo Teresiano in 1842 .

His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 46 A); transferred from the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . In 1894, Nobilegasse in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) was named after him.
