The Schauspielhaus Graz is an Austrian spoken theater . It is part of the city ​​crown of Graz and is located in the first district of the Inner City .

history

"A well-ordered drama is a true school of morals , politeness and language", it is said in an appeal by Count Orsini and the police chief to the Styrian estates in 1770. After lengthy financial complications, the construction work for a new theater building in Graz was started on the 24th Commenced October 1774. After a construction period of less than two years, the new theater was opened on September 9, 1776. It was a rural theater, which was planned and built by the then Graz “landscape master mason” and later court architect Joseph Hueber . During this time, Emanuel Schikaneder was also part of the ensemble for one season. From 1791–1797 Joseph Bellomo (1753–1833) was director of the Grätzer Estates National Theater , 1823–33 Johann August Stöger .

The newly renovated theater burned down completely in the morning hours of Christmas Day 1823 except for the main and middle walls, but was rebuilt according to the plans of the Imperial and Royal Building Councilor Peter von Nobile . Until the end of January 1824, performances were held in the country house and in two amateur theaters. From January 29, 1824 to October 3, 1825, the performances took place in the auxiliary theater that was newly set up in the state riding school in Reitschulgasse (today: Mondscheingasse 3) . Immediately after the fire in 1823, the stalls started building a new theater in the same place. The small and large ballrooms were torn down and a free space in front of the theater was gained, today's Freiheitsplatz. At the same time, the so-called Suppansche Garden, which lay between the theater and Karmeliterplatz and bordered the large ballroom with a retaining wall, was abandoned and Hartiggasse was created as a connection between Franzensplatz and Karmeliterplatz. The opening of Franzensplatz resulted in the development of the main front of the theater against it, while the main entrance in Hofgasse was retained because the ground floor masonry was relatively undamaged and the connecting passage with the Hofburg ended here, hence the development of the vestibules had to be relocated to the Hofgasse side. So the entrance on the main front was always only a side entrance, as the longitudinal axis of the stage and auditorium had to be perpendicular to Hofgasse due to the location of the building site.

Austria was in a period of inflation and raising the necessary funds was difficult. The funds were covered by the sale of the last estates cannons stored in Trieste to the King of Naples, from the proceeds of the "Rohitscher Sauerbrunnenoperationskassa" and advances from the estate deposit fund. Theater director Stöger took on the design of the building plan. However, Stöger's plans were sent to the court architect Peter von Nobile in Vienna for correction. This only had to make a few technical changes. In addition to the two named, Professor Meißner designed the heating systems in Vienna. In order to reduce the risk of fire, the Meißner apparatus was installed as an air-heating heating system for the entire building . The establishment of the machines was taken over by the then famous Viennese theater machinist Adam Roller. The supervision of the building was in the hands of Baron Mandell, the senior construction assistant Johann Nepomuk Edler von Ortenhoffer and the senior building assistant Perschon. Peter von Nobile asked Baron Mandell regularly about the progress of construction and mentioned in a letter dated May 18, 1824: “His Majesty viewed everything with the highest quality, dissected the system of decoration with admirable insight and declared himself in favor of the drawing which the Has a character of rational simplicity in itself, and noted hiebey that the choice is yours (the stands). "

On October 4, 1825, the name day of Emperor Franz I , the estate theater (later: Landschaftliches Theater , then: Landestheater ) was reopened (address from 1838: Franzensplatz; from 1918 or 1938: Freiheitsplatz 7). On the opening evening the following were given: Styria and art as a poetic prelude by Karl Gottfried von Leitner and, as the main piece, the tragedy (in five acts) Weißröschen (also: Turturell ) by Joseph Christian von Zedlitz .

The most famous actor in this era of new beginnings was Johann Nestroy , who died on Elisabethstrasse in Graz .

In 1887 the house was renamed Stadttheater , after the opening of the new Stadttheater in 1899 it was renamed Theater am Franzensplatz , and after the First World War it was changed to the Schauspielhaus Graz .

In 1953 the house was closed for reasons of building control. After renovations while preserving the historical building stock and with a new stage building, it was reopened in 1964 with " Hamlet " - the main role played by Helmuth Lohner . Since then, the theater has been committed to spoken theater and has become an integral part of the Styrian cultural scene. The last major renovation of the entire stage technology took place in the summer breaks of 1999 and 2000. During these years, the architecturally renewed foyer was also gradually adapted to contemporary requirements. In addition to building one (main stage) with 540 seats, building two (former rehearsal stage with around 100 seats) and building three (former level 3 with around 50 seats) will also be used. In the theater there is also the Redoutensaal as an event location.

From 2000 to 2006 the Schauspielhaus Graz was under the direction of drama director Matthias Fontheim , from the 2004/05 season he was managing director. Matthias Fontheim then moved to the Mainz State Theater. From the 2006/07 season to the 2014/15 season , Anna Badora was the theater director and previous general manager of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus , Artistic Director in Graz. Under Badora, the Schauspielhaus Graz was accepted into the UTE (Union des Théâtres de l'Europe) in 2008 as the only Austrian theater.

In the 2015/16 season, Iris Laufenberg took over as managing director of the Schauspielhaus Graz. Georg Kandolf is the artistic director , Karla Mäder is the lead dramaturge. The Schauspielhaus Graz is part of the ETC ( European Theater Convention ), the stages have been renamed HAUS EINS, HAUS ZWEI and HAUS DREI . The program is rich in topics, playing styles and approaches. It ranges from monumental drama to classic comedy and diverse contemporary drama.

Architecture and design

The three-story building block has a late Classicist facade design with two-story pillar arcades and cast-iron masks of comedy and tragedy next to a lyre on the side facing Hofgasse. The west side to the Freiheitsplatz has a frontispiece and an arbor . In addition, there is a building inscription board, dated 1776, and five sandstone relief coats of arms of the governor and some decreed: for the governor at the time, Count Herberstein, the middle, largest shield with rafters; to the right and left of it the coats of arms of Count Anton Inzaghi (divided into four with three striding lions and the double-headed eagle above) and Count Karl von Trauttmannsdorff (with the rose in the heart label), on the far right the coat of arms of Joseph Edlen von Lendenfeld (with the diagonally arranged sheaves) and finally on the left with two ovals, the coat of arms of the Stainzer provost Johann de Angelis. These stone coats of arms were attached to the Freiheitsplatz side of the theater after the last renovation of the Graz playhouse in 1964.
