Volker Hesse (born December 30, 1944 in the Hunsrück ) is a German theater director .

Life

Hesse, son of the opera director Rudolf Hesse, studied theater , German and philosophy in Cologne and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1972. phil. After taking acting lessons with Will Quadflieg, he assisted directors such as Leopold Lindtberg and Hans Hollmann . The first productions took place at the Viennese café theater, at the Rampe in Bern and with the independent group Die Claque in Baden near Zurich. In the mid-1970s, Hesse staged at theaters such as the Stadttheater Bern, the Stadttheater Trier and the Münchner Kammerspiele . In 1979 Hesse became a member of the management team of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. There he staged, among other things, Graser's Widow Burning (1980), Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm (1980/1981), Nathan the Way (1983) and Dorsts Heinrich or the Pains of Fantasy (1985). Hesse was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1987 with Arthur Schnitzler's Professor Bernhardi . After 1985 he worked again as a freelance director, for example at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel and at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin .

In 1993 he and Stephan Müller took over the management of the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich , which he directed until 1999. Hesse's world premieres In Sekten (1995) and Top Dogs (1997) were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . Together with Urs Widmer, he received the 3sat Prize for Top Dogs . After two more years as a freelance director - during which Hesse staged the Einsiedler Welttheater in a version by Thomas Hürlimann (2000) - he took over the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Berlin in 2001 , which he directed until the end of the 2006 season. In 2007 Hesse staged the Einsiedler Welttheater again, and in 2008 and 2012 he directed the Tellspiele in Altdorf UR . Also in 2008, the Lucerne cultural center Südpol opened with Hesse's production of Hürlimann's deadline.

In 2010 Volker Hesse was awarded the Hans Reinhart Ring . He received the award for his versatile productions and his services as a theater director.

In 2016 he directed the self-written game Sacre del Gottardo with 600 participants at the celebrations around the Gotthard Base Tunnel . The myth of the Alps and their technical overcoming through traffic routes over the centuries are interwoven with moving images. The staging took place in parallel at both tunnel portals and was partially broadcast live on Swiss radio and television .

On December 10, 2016, the premiere of his production of "Geächtet" took place at the Schauspielhaus Graz .
