Stephan Müller (born July 7, 1951 in Basel ) is a Swiss theater and opera director , dramaturge and lecturer in plurimedial aesthetics .

Life

Stephan Müller's theater career began in 1972 at the Basel Theater under the management of Werner Düggelin as an extra and assistant director, soon afterwards he became head dramaturge at the Basel Theater. In 1975 he traveled to the USA for several years and worked with Robert Wilson , Richard Foreman , Mabou Mines , Meredith Monk , Ric Zank , Lee Breuer and founded his own theater group mixed media . From 1978 he worked at the Schauspielhaus Zürich , where he headed the laboratory. 1980–1988 he worked as a freelance director in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Tübingen, Basel, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Hamburg ( Kampnagel ), San Francisco and New York (Public Theater) and lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts . In 1988 he returned to Theater Basel as a director under the directorship of Frank Baumbauer . From 1993 to 1999 he and Volker Hesse directed the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich. From 1999 to 2004 he worked at the Vienna Burgtheater as a director and dramaturge. He is currently the head of the Master of Arts course for directing at the Zurich University of the Arts and staging at various German-speaking theaters and opera houses.
