Mathias Abel (born June 22, 1981 in Kaiserslautern ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

In his youth, the defender played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and moved to Eintracht Bad Kreuznach in 1998 . From January 2001 to 2002 he was under contract with Borussia Dortmund , for whose amateurs he played in the Regionalliga.

From the 2002/03 season he joined the second division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 , who played close to his home country and had been interested in him two years earlier. In Mainz Abel was originally intended for the league team, but then became a regular player for the professionals. He initially played in central defense and then in the second half of the season as a right defender. A cruciate ligament rupture in February 2004 forced Abel to take a six-month break. After Mainz's promotion to the Bundesliga, the defender found his way back into the team.

In the summer of 2005, Abel signed a contract with FC Schalke 04, which ran from July 2006 to 2010 . Due to a protracted back injury, Abel lost his regular place with the Mainz team in the 2005/06 season. At FC Schalke 04 he was only used once in the first 18 games of the 2006/07 season and on January 31, 2007 he was on loan with a purchase option at the end of the season for Hamburger SV . But even at HSV, he only made seven appearances. Since HSV did not take advantage of a purchase option, Abel returned to FC Schalke 04 in the 2007/08 season. However, he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on September 10, 2007 and was not used for the entire season.

For the 2008/09 season Abel returned for free to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, where he signed a five-year contract. Because of his third cruciate ligament rupture, he made his competitive debut after two years; he had previously played in the second team. Favored by the injury of his rivals in central defense Rodnei and Jan Šimůnek , he was in the starting line-up from the middle of the first half of the 2010/11 season . At the beginning of the second half of the season he was ousted by Rodnei, but was able to push Martin Amedick out of the starting line-up in the further course of the second half . In the game against SC Freiburg on matchday 26 he wore the captain's armband for the first time.

After the 2012/13 season Abel left 1. FC Kaiserslautern after his contract was not extended. After being out of a club for over a year, he ended his career in 2014 and was elected to the FCK Supervisory Board in November 2014.
