Life

Karl Gottfried Ritter von Leitner was a descendant of a family distinguished by the knightly nobility since the 17th century. His father Cajetan Franz v. L., a state accountant, was also active in literature, died in 1805, the mother married for the second time in 1807. After his high school studies in Graz Leitner turned to the study of law and Styrian history. During his studies he became a member of the Graz fraternity in 1820 . As early as 1824 and 1825 he held provisional teaching posts at the grammar schools in Cilli and Graz. He was also a guest at Marie Pachler-Koschak's salon . Renowned local poets and scholars, such as Johann von Kalchberg and the orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall , became aware of the author's poetic talent through the publication of Leitner's poems and novels (from 1820). Supported by these people, Leitner came into the service of the Styrian estates. He became second secretary in 1835 and first secretary in 1837 and retired as such in 1854 because of his poor health.

After Leitner married in 1846, his wife Karoline died in Pisa in 1854 on a trip to Italy . Archduke Johann von Österreich appointed Leitner in 1858 as one of the three curators of the Landesmuseum Joanneum founded by the Archduke in Graz . Leitner's circle of friends and acquaintances included well-known poets such as Johann Gabriel Seidl , Anastasius Grün and Franz Grillparzer , as well as the musician and mystic Jakob Lorber , whose biography Leitner wrote around 1884 and whose religious convictions he shared.
