Bob Flanagan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bob Flanagan ( December 27, 1952 - January 4, 1996 ) was an American writer and artist. His life was shaped by the hereditary disease cystic fibrosis : he found his way to counter the pain caused by the disease by using BDSM practices; this confrontation became an essential part of his art. He can be seen as a performance artist in the indexed music video Happiness in Slavery by the band Nine Inch Nails ; he depicts someone who straps himself into a machine that rapes and then kills him. He had a supporting role in the video for Crush My Soul by the band Godflesh , in which he is being hoisted under the ceiling of a cathedral by his wife Sheree Rose hanging upside down as a figure of Christ . The documentation SICK: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist was created about him .
