Kurt-Werner Seidel

Kurt-Werner Seidel (born October 31, 1930 in Berlin , † 1988 in West Berlin ) was a German firefighter and from 1970 to 1988 the thirteenth head of the Berlin fire department (counting since 1851, since 1949 for the western part of the city).

Life

After his predecessor Heinz Hoene retired, fire director Seidel was temporarily transferred to the management of the fire brigade on December 1, 1970, who until then was head of Section I A (operations and management). On March 1, 1971, the trained physicist was appointed regional fire director.

During his almost 20-year term in office, the emergency ambulance system was introduced in Berlin in 1974 and the city's first youth fire brigade was founded in the same year . After it became more and more apparent that the standard loading of the LF 16 , which is primarily geared towards fire fighting, was no longer in keeping with the times, the new Berlin fire fighting train was developed under Seidel after many experiments in the mid-1980s . This comprised two fire- fighting vehicles and a turntable ladder with a basket, each with a low design so that it can also be used in backyards.

In 1988 Seidel, already suffering from his severe heart disease, was given early retirement. However, the fire chief has not recovered. In the same year the former state fire director died in Berlin. He was married and had two children.

Seidel's successor as head of the Berlin fire brigade was Wolfgang Scholz , who headed the agency until 1992.

"Kurt-Werner Seidel" fireboat

The fireboat I of the Berlin fire brigade, built in 1976 by Spandauer Industrie-Werke , was christened "Kurt-Werner Seidel" in 1995. The boat was in service until it was retired in the summer of 2006, most recently at the Spandau Süd fire station.

An airfield fire fighting vehicle of the Berlin-Tegel airport fire brigade was also named "Kurt-Werner Seidel".
