Career

Julito in the famous Las Ventas bullring in Madrid

Julito's grandfather, Julio Aparicio Nieto , was already active as a torero and also introduced his son, Julio Aparicio Martínez (* 1932), into the life of a matador. After he took part in his first bullfights from 1950 , he ended his career in 1969, the year his son was born. With advanced age, Julito got the chance to prove himself in the arena in 1987. So he made his debut as Novillero on February 8, 1987 in the bullring in Gandia in the Valencia region , an inexperienced fighter who first tests his skills on young bulls, so-called Novillos . On his debut, he stood at the side of the more experienced toreros Fernando Lozano and Gregorio de Jesús . On April 15, 1990 Julito celebrated his Alternativa , the official appointment to a matador. The famous matador Curro Romero elevated him to the status of a professional matador.

According to the statutes, the appointment as matador in a corrida , the Spanish name for bullfighting, must take place in the Arena Las Ventas in the capital Madrid . However, it took more than four years for this to be confirmed. The fight in Madrid finally followed on May 10, 1994, which made him a true matador. His godfather was the well-known Spanish matador José Ortega Cano , spouse of the Spanish singer and actress Rocío Jurado, who died in 2006 . In addition, Jesulín de Ubrique , who was five years his junior, was also present at this ceremony as a witness. About six months later, he got his confirmation on November 13, 1994 in Mexico . His godfather was Jorge Gutiérrez , who was accompanied by Manolo Mejía as a witness.

By 2007 he took part in 28 paseíllo and cut 46 bull ears and three bull tails as a personal reward. From 2008 Julito found his way back to the top and has since been considered one of the best matadors in Spain.

On May 29, 2012, he resigned after a disappointing evening in Las Ventas.

Accident in May 2010

On May 21, 2010, an accident with serious consequences for Julio Aparicio occurred in the Arena Las Ventas in Madrid. In a fight with a 530-kilogram bull, the 41-year-old slipped and was no longer able to get up in time. The bull Opíparo rammed his right horn into his lower jaw, which pierced the tongue and stuck out through the open mouth of the matador. In addition to a smashed lower jaw and a pierced tongue, Aparicio's upper jaw was also broken in the accident. After his injury was briefly described as life-threatening, Aparicio was saved after a six-hour emergency operation. The day before the accident, Julito was still involved in a bullfight in the amphitheater in Nîmes . He made his comeback less than three months after the injury.

Less than a month earlier, a bull had torn the left thigh of José Tomás , another bullfighter who is one of the best today.

Julito's last agent and supervisor was the French Simón Casas , who was once active as a matador himself.
