Paul de Noailles, (6th) Duke of Noailles (born January 4, 1802 in Paris , † May 30, 1885 ibid) was a French statesman and historian . He comes from the old French noble family Noailles , which produced important French personalities since the 16th century .

Life

In 1824 Paul inherited the title and peerage of his great-uncle Louis-François-Paul de Noailles (1739-1824), entered the chamber of peers in 1827 and was one of the legitimists . He also made himself known as a historian. He was elected a member of the Academy in 1849 on the square of Chateaubriands , whose friend and confidante he was and who also proposed him .

On February 5, 1823, he married Alice de Rochechouart (1800–1887), a daughter of Victurnien de Rochechouart, 8th Duke of Mortemart, with whom he had three children:

  1. Pauline Victurnienne de Noailles (* 1824; † April 4, 1844) was a student of Frédéric Chopin , to whom "Mademoiselle Pauline de Noailles" dedicated his ballad No. 3 in A flat major, op. 47, which was published in 1841 by Maurice Schlesinger . On June 20, 1842, she married Marie Joseph Victor Maurice, Comte de Noailles.
  2. Jules-Charles-Victurnien de Noailles, 7th Duke of Noailles.
  3. Emmanuel-Henri-Victurnien de Noailles, Marquis de Noailles.

Works

He wrote a Histoire de Madame de Maintenon (Paris 1848-58, 4 volumes) and Histoire de la maison St-Cyr (2nd edition 1856).
