Jean Strauwen

Jean Strauwen (born March 22, 1878 in Laeken , † January 4, 1947 in Brussels ) was a Belgian composer and conductor .

Life

Jean Strauwen completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels with Edouard Jacobs ( harmony ), Gustave Huberti ( counterpoint ) and Edgar Tinel ( fugue ).

In 1907 he became conductor of the then well-known Belgian orchestra Le Cercle Instrumental in Brussels. With this orchestra he had considerable success and gave concerts regularly in the "Cirque Royal" and in the city park of Brussels. Most of the press reviewers were full of praise in their reports. Also in 1907 he became conductor of the fanfare orchestra Koninklijke St. Martinus Fanfare in Halle and held this position until 1946. With this orchestra, too, he won national and international awards. He also conducted the fanfare orchestras of Leval-Trahegnies and Ressaix .

In 1934 Strauven was appointed professor of harmony at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and a little later director of the Nivelles Music Academy .

His compositions were initially dedicated to the symphonic orchestra, but later he concentrated on compositions for wind orchestra.
