Luigi Abbiate

Luigi (Louis) Abbiate (born January 4, 1866 in Monaco ; † July 23, 1933 there ; also in Vence ) was a French composer , cellist and music teacher .

Life

Childhood and Musical Education, 1866-1887

Abbiate came from a musical family. His father was a horn player and his mother also came from a musical family. He showed a musical talent early on. Since his parents died early, he was first raised by Jesuits. He received piano and organ lessons. He received his first cello lessons from a cellist of the Orchester du Casino de Monte-Carlo. At the age of 12 he made his first appearances at religious ceremonies. He took over the organist service at the " Chapelle de la Visitation ". In the casino he got to know the repertoire of orchestral music. His uncle enrolled him in the Turin Conservatory in 1879 . Here he studied the cello with Carlo Casella (1834–96), Alfredo Casella's father . At the age of fifteen he received two first prizes at the Conservatory, in the subjects of cello and harmony. In Turin he made his debut as the first cellist at the Teatro Alfieri and the Teatro Balbo. In 1882 he went to Paris. There he attended Auguste-Joseph Franchomme's class . After his death Jules Delsart taught him . To finance his studies, he played in cafes, at balls, in small theaters and at concerts - on the one hand at the Concerts populaires de musique classique des Jules Pasdeloup , on the other hand in the Nouveaux concerts des Charles Lamoureux . In 1887, at the age of twenty, he left the conservatory with a first prize in the cello subject.

Concert activities and compositions from 1887 to 1911

In 1889 he returned to Monaco and became principal cellist in the Orchester du Casino de Monte-Carlo. Here he played the “great” composers of his time, such as Saint-Saëns , Lalo and Dvořák . In 1891 he went to Paris as a solo cellist at the Opéra Comique. Encouraged by his success, he started a European tour to England, Germany, Russia and Switzerland. His reputation as "Paganini des Cellos" preceded him. His clear, virtuoso brilliance, his sense of style, his pleasant tone, his exquisite phrasing and the purity of his intonation were appreciated. His repertoire included works by Locatelli , Boccherini , Beethoven , Piatti , Lalo , Brahms , Saint-Saëns , Tchaikovsky , Popper and others. Despite his success as a soloist, he devoted himself to composition. But the success he was used to did not materialize. In 1895 he wrote a cello concerto. Luigi Abbiate was represented by the Hermann Wolff Concert Management in Berlin. He stayed in Berlin in February 1895. On February 13, 1895, he and the singer Marie Rost performed a concert in the Bechstein Hall. He played the Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor op. 33 by Camille Saint-Saëns and an arrangement of the 2nd violin romance by Ludwig van Beethoven . Another concert followed on February 23 at the same venue. In Berlin he also played Alfredo Piatti's cello concerto , an arrangement of the Fantaisie Caprice by Henri Vieuxtemps and a cello sonata by Luigi Boccherini . On April 6th, in a soiree in the Salle Érard in Paris, he played the cello concerto in E minor by David Popper , the 2nd romance by Beethoven, an elegy by Saint-Quentin, Hungarian dances by Johannes Brahms, a tarantella by Piatti and a Locatelli's Sonata. On February 20, 1896, before a major European tour, he played his last concert in the Salle Érard with the cello concertos by Édouard Lalo and Saint-Saëns and other pieces by Goltermann, Popper, Davidoff and Piatti. He organized another farewell soiree in January 1899 in the Salle Erard before a concert tour through Russia with performances in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. This time cello concertos by Boccherini, Lalo and Dvořák were on the program. The program was supplemented by the performance of various songs composed by Abbiate based on texts by Paul Verlaine , Valentin and Ossip Mandelstam , which were performed by the singers Daraut and Maugiére. On April 27 and May 11, 1900 he played trios with the pianist André Bloch and the violinist Jules Charles Pennequin (1864-1914) in the Salle Fétes de Journal in Paris . They played works by Franz Schubert, Léon Boëllmann , Saint Saens, Mozart, André Gedalge and Brahms. Towards the end of 1900 he published a cello school, Nouvelle méthode complète pour violoncelle , which was very well received. On March 1st, 15th and 29th he played chamber music with André Bloch and the violinist George Enescu . On February 21, March 7 and March 21, 1901 he gave concerts with Ricardo Viñes and the violinist Henri Sailler. In 1901 he published the Preludes et fugues pour violoncelle seul Preludes and fugues for solo cello with the music publisher Enoch in Paris ]. He also published a Largo and a Scherzino for bassoon and piano for Evette et Schaeffer. On February 9, 1902, Abbiate played his cello concerto at the Lamoureux Concerts . But the audience, who talked during the performance, and the critics vehemently rejected the work. This caused Abbiate to leave Paris and initially not to return. He traveled to England, Russia and Italy. In 1902, under the impression of the premiere of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande , he wrote A propos de Pelléas et Mélisande . In 1904 he published the suite for violoncello and piano with Leduc and his second piano sonata in the Mutuelle edition. On October 26, November 9 and December 15, 1905, he gave a series of three concerts in London in the Bechstein Hall with the piano accompanist Ernesto Vannuccini. In the following months he lived in the city, where he continued to give concerts and teach. In 1906 he gave several concerts, for example in the Queen's Hallon May 9th with Popper's Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 24. In 1906 he became principal cellist at La Scala in Milan . Here he played with Arturo Toscanini . In 1907 Leduc published the Suite in D minor for cello and piano op.16.

In 1909 he founded the Abbiate Quartet, together with Gino Nastrucci and Segré and G.Albisi. In a competition of the Amici della Musica they received the gold medal. At the same time he also founded an association of modern composers. His symphonic poem Illuminations gained some recognition.

Period in Russia, 1911 to 1920

In 1911 he was a member of the jury at the cello competition for the 50th anniversary of the Imperial Russian Music Society in Moscow. Due to the successful cello school and his career as a soloist, he was offered a call at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1911 to lead a cello class. The director Alexander Glasunow called him on the recommendations of Camille Saint-Saëns , Jules Massenet and Gabriel Faures , all of whom Abbiate's artistry in playing the cello highly valued. In Russia he met his wife and started a family. He also had enough freedom to compose. But the revolution ended those pleasant years. There is evidence that he lived and taught in Kostroma in 1918 . In 1920 he was allowed to leave the country, but lost almost all of his property. He was only able to save his cello and a few manuscripts.

Last years after returning from Russia until his death, 1920 to 1933

Abbiate was among the French citizens who entered Finland on April 27 and 28, 1920, via England and then back to France. In Le Menestrel of July 20, 1920, he wrote the article La Musique en Russie sous le régime bolchevique about music in Bolshevik Russia . Difficult years followed, during which he lost his son. He also went through a difficult time musically. He trundled through small concert halls on the Côte d'Azur. In 1922 a municipal music school, the Ecole Municipale de Musique , was opened in Monaco , today's Academie Rainier III. He became its director and found time to compose again. On January 16, 1924 Abbiate designed a matinee with the pianist Lucien Jourdan and the actress Marguerite Maze at the Theater Victor-Hugo in Monte Carlo . Abbiate died in Vence on July 23, 1933.
