History

The place was first mentioned in 1898 as Salchaket , which means "mouth of Salcha" in the language of the indigenous people. In 1904 the place was called Saltshatsheg and is now called Salcha, based on the river of the same name.

In some years, temperatures rise faster than usual in March / April and snow and ice begin to thaw. However, the meltwater cannot flow out of the Salcha River into the Tanana River , which is still partly frozen. Because of the ice barriers, backwater even presses from the Tanana River to Salcha, where severe flooding then occurs. The average temperatures in normal years are - 4 ° C to - 16 ° C in March and - 5 ° C to + 7 ° C in April.
