Fairbanks North Star Borough (German: Fairbanks North Star District) is a borough in the US state of Alaska in the United States of America . The borough is part of the Alaskan metropolitan area of Fairbanks, so-called Fairbanks, Alaska Metropolitan Statistical Area , which extends over the entire area of the borough and is only slightly smaller than the entire US state of New Jersey . In 2010 a population of 97,581 was determined.

The borough has an area of 19,280 square kilometers; 19,079 square kilometers of this is land and 201 square kilometers (1.04 percent) is water.
history
The borough was formed on January 1, 1964 and named after the city of Fairbanks, which was named in honor of the politician and American Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks . The addition “North Star” (“Polar Star”) was selected in a corresponding student competition.
31 structures and sites in the borough are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 20, 2020), including Ladd Field , the steamboat Nenana and the George C. Thomas Memorial Library have the status of National Historic Landmarks .

Administration and politics
The borough council has nine members who are elected every three years. The Borough Mayor is the head of administration and is elected for the same period. Currently this is Luke Hopkins .
education
Fairbanks is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks , the main campus of the University of Alaska System . At the university there is also the Georgeson Botanical Garden , a botanical garden .
