Jan Six
Jan Six (born January 4, 1618 in Amsterdam ; † May 28, 1700 ibid) was a Dutch art collector, patron and Amsterdam regent of the Golden Age .
life and work
Jan Six was born from the marriage of Joan Six and Anna Wymer. He belonged to the patrician and merchant family of Six , who were very influential at the time. Jan Six was married to the daughter of the Amsterdam mayor and surgeon Nicolaes Tulp . One of his sons was the long-time mayor Jan (II) Six . Through his friendship with Rembrandt , he had drawn him several times in 1647. When Rembrandt ran into financial difficulties, Six had Rembrandt paint a portrait for him in 1654 . When Six married Margaretha Tulp in 1655, Govaert Flinck , not Rembrandt, was commissioned to paint her.
Jan Six was also friends with the poet Joost van den Vondel . He himself also wrote a tragedy about Medea . He left an important collection of paintings, including a. by Rembrandt, Frans Hals , Jacob Izaaksoon van Ruisdael , Paulus Potter , Pieter Jansz Saenredam , Lucas van Leyden a . a. This collection, known as the " Collectie Six ", is open to the public when the interested visitor reports to the Rijksmuseum .
Jan Six came into the city government in the disaster year ( Rampjaar ) in 1672 as Schepen and in 1679 as Vroedschap , of which he was mayor in 1691.
