Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen-Eisenach (born October 17, 1666 in Friedewald , † January 4, 1729 in Eisenach ) was Duke of Sachsen-Eisenach and came from the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin .

Johann Wilhelm was born the younger son of Duke Johann Georg I of Saxony-Eisenach and his wife Johanetta von Sayn-Wittgenstein .

Life

After the death of his father in 1686, his older brother, Johann Georg II. Ascended the ducal throne. When he died childless in 1698, Johann Wilhelm became the ruling Duke of Saxony-Eisenach. On the basis of his parents' will from 1685, however, he had already received the county of Sayn-Altenkirchen with full state sovereignty in 1686 in order to maintain his standard of living. Eisenach experienced a cultural boom under him, which was not least due to the court orchestra, of which Georg Philipp Telemann was the most prominent member .

Marriages and offspring

Johann Wilhelm was married four times and had a total of 12 children.

  1. in his first marriage he married Amalia von Nassau-Dietz in 1690 . His eldest son Wilhelm Heinrich came from this marriage and was to be his successor
  2. in 1697 he married Christine Juliane von Baden-Durlach in his second marriage
  3. in his third marriage in 1708 he married Magdalena Sybille von Sachsen-Weißenfels
  4. in his fourth marriage in 1727 he married Marie Christine Felizitas zu Leiningen-Dagsburg-Falkenburg-Heidesheim

In addition to his son, four other daughters reached adulthood:

  1. Johannetta Antoinetta Juliana (1698–1726), married Duke Johann Adolf II of Saxony-Weissenfels in 1721
  2. Karoline Christine (1699–1743), married Landgrave Karl I of Hessen-Philippsthal in 1725
  3. Charlotte Wilhelmine Juliane (1703–1774)
  4. Christiane Wilhelmine (1711–1740), married Prince Karl von Nassau-Usingen in 1734
