Johann Georg I of Saxe-Eisenach

Johann Georg I of Saxony-Eisenach (* July 12, 1634 in Weimar ; † September 19, 1686 in the Prunftau hunting lodge near Wilhelmsthal during the hunt) was Duke of Saxony-Eisenach and came from the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin .

Johann Georg was born the younger son of Duke Wilhelm IV of Saxe-Weimar and his wife Eleonore Dorothea , a born princess of Anhalt-Dessau .

Life

In 1655 he went to Kurbrandenburg as a colonel, where he initially commanded a regiment on horseback. On October 8, 1658 he became major general and fought in Poland. He was then appointed Imperial Field Marshal Lieutenant.

After the death of his father in 1662 his older brother Johann Ernst II inherited the throne of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, another brother Adolf Wilhelm received Saxe-Eisenach. Johann Georg I received the income from a number of offices in the new Duchy of Saxony-Eisenach and took up his residence in Marksuhl .

Adolf Wilhelm died in 1668, his son Wilhelm August became a duke, but since he was still a toddler, Johann Georg I reigned for him and also became the new duke's guardian. Wilhelm August died in 1671 at the age of three, now the duchy fell to Johann Georg I, who thus became the founder of the younger line of the dukes of Saxony-Eisenach, which existed until 1741.

He employed the poet Kaspar Stieler as chamber, feudal and court secretary.

Under the company name Der Trachtende he was accepted as a member of the literary fruitful society .
