Alonso de Salazar

Alonso Toribio de Salazar (* unknown; † September 5, 1526 off the island of Guam ) was a Spanish explorer . He was the European who discovered the Marshall Islands on August 21, 1526 as the commander of the Santa Maria de la Victoria . However, it is not known whether de Salazar landed. According to him, he sighted the Bokak Atoll - Atoll . His ship was the only one to return from a circumnavigation of the world under Frey Garcia Jofre de Loaysa , which had the aim of expanding the knowledge of the previous circumnavigation by Ferdinand Magellan .

A few days after discovering the Marshall Islands, he died of scurvy on September 5, 1526 , just a few hours after his ship left the port of Guam.
