John Simplot

John Richard Simplot (born January 4, 1909 in Dubuque , Iowa , † May 25, 2008 in Boise , Idaho ) was an American entrepreneur in the food industry . His net worth was estimated at approximately $ 2.5 billion in 2005 .

His company, JR Simplot Company, is considered to be the inventor of frozen chips. He realized that freezing french fries could be a very profitable proposition. In 1948, his company made its first, initially unsuccessful, efforts to produce frozen French fries. The frozen fries sank to the bottom of the frying baskets and were not fried evenly. Finally, in 1953, Simplot applied for a patent for frozen French fries.
