Louis-Léopold Boilly (born July 5, 1761 in La Bassée near Lille , Département Nord , † January 4, 1845 in Paris ) was a French painter and lithographer .

Life

Boilly was the son of the wood sculptor Arnould Boilly. After a stay in Douai he studied with the painter Dominique Doncre in Arras from 1779 . In 1785 he went to Paris, where he quickly achieved success as a painter of portraits and genre paintings. In 1791 he took part in the salon for the first time . His genre pictures are considered to be particularly lively and true to nature . His pictures of Parisian life are also of moral and historical value. Boilly was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor for his services .

His sons Jules (1796–1874) and Alphonse (1801–1867) were painters, his son Edouard Boilly (1799–1854) was a composer; his nephew Eugène was also a painter.
