Jean-Baptiste Isabey (born April 11, 1767 in Nancy , † April 18, 1855 in Paris ) was a French painter .

Life

Jean-Baptiste Isabey was born on April 11, 1767 in Nancy, the son of a grocer. In Nancy he was initially trained by the history painter Jean Girardet and the landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Claudot . In 1784 he went to Paris and became a student of Jacques-Louis David . After completing his training, he first worked as a miniature painter and draftsman. Before the revolution he received portraits from the court in Versailles . After 1789 he was close to revolutionary circles. In 1796 he took over the management of the drawing class at a girls' boarding school. One of his pupils was Hortense de Beauharnais , Napoleon's step-daughter , whose court painter he became. In 1804 he helped to furnish the ceremony of Napoleon's coronation as emperor and made drawings for the official commemorative publication for this event. After the fall of Napoleon I, the artist worked for the Bourbons , whom he - like almost all rulers of Europe - depicted in his pictures. Isabey is one of the outstanding miniature painters of his time. From 1805 he created the first completed drawings in the Estampemanier. A plate based on a drawing by Charles Percier is considered a masterpiece of painting on porcelain and depicts Napoleon I in his regalia in the middle and busts of the marshals and generals of France who commanded his armies in 1805. Isabey also depicted the princes and ministers present at the Congress of Vienna in a picture. Also worth mentioning is his lithographic work Voyage pittoresque et romantique dans l'ancienne France . Jean-Baptiste Isabey died in Paris on April 18, 1855.

His son Eugène Isabey was also a painter and was trained by Jean-Baptiste.
