Pavel Smetáček

Pavel Smetáček (born January 4, 1940 in Prague ) is a Czech jazz clarinet, saxophonist and composer who also worked as a music producer and diplomat.

The son of the conductor Václav Smetáček studied clarinet at the Prague Conservatory . He was excluded from studying musicology at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University , for which he was initially admitted, for two years because of his rejection of Marxist ideology. With his brother Ivan and six other music students, he founded the group Traditional Jazz Studio in 1959 , which he directed and which later also included his son Štěpán as a drummer. He also produced recordings for Bessie Smith , Eva Olmerová and Giorgio Gaslini . In 1971 he participated in the founding of the jazz section of the Association of Musicians of Czechoslovakia.

Between 1994 and 1998 he was a councilor at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Italy. In 2007 he published his biography.
