Life

Felfe informs himself about the spring work in the fields of the Frankfurt (Oder) district, 1988.

Felfe completed a commercial apprenticeship. He joined the KPD in 1945 and became a member of the SED in 1946 when the SPD and KPD were forced to merge . In 1946 he joined the FDJ . Until 1953 he worked for the SED district leaderships Kamenz and Flöha and the state management of Saxony . He attended the party college in 1953 and was second secretary of the Central Council of the FDJ until 1957. From 1954 to 1958 he was chairman of the youth committee of the People's Chamber , from 1954 to 1963 a candidate and then a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the SED .

From 1957 to 1960 Felfe worked as deputy chairman and chairman of the council of the district of Zschopau and until 1963 as chairman of the council of the district of Karl-Marx-Stadt . He graduated from the Industrial Institute of the Technical University of Dresden from 1963-1965 . After that he was deputy head of department at the Central Committee of the SED.

From 1966 Felfe was secretary for agitation and propaganda of the SED district leadership in Halle , in 1968 he became its second secretary, in 1971 as successor to Horst Sindermann first secretary. Since 1973 he was a candidate and since 1976 a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED and of the National Defense Council . As secretary of the SED Central Committee for Agriculture, he initiated a course correction in agriculture from 1981 , which aimed to abolish the separation of animal and plant production, reduce bureaucracy and save resources.

On August 8, 1988, the West German news magazine Der Spiegel published an article speculating about Erich Honecker's possible successor . Autumn 1989 was assumed to be the time of change, assuming that the 40th anniversary of the GDR's foundation was a suitable date. In addition to Egon Krenz , Siegfried Lorenz and Günter Schabowski , Werner Felfe was also named in the article as possible candidates for the successor to Honecker . Felfe was quoted in the article (analogously): “Political perestroika must not stop at the GDR.” Less than a month after the article appeared, Werner Felfe died of acute heart failure at the age of 60. His urn was buried in the memorial of the socialists in the central cemetery Friedrichsfelde in Berlin-Lichtenberg .
