Peter de Spina III.
Peter de Spina III. , also called Petrus de Spina (born January 4, 1592 in Aachen ; † March 23, 1655 in Frankfurt am Main ), was a doctor and professor of medicine at the University of Heidelberg and personal physician to several princely families .
origin
Peter de Spina comes from an old Huguenot family from Armentières in what was then the Spanish Netherlands , who initially called themselves de l'Espine and who fled the Catholic Spanish troops of Duke Alba via Aachen to Heidelberg in the middle of the 16th century . His grandfather was Peter de Spina I from Armentières, later Aachen city physician and personal physician to King Christian III. from Denmark and Norway and his parents were Peter de Spina II. , professor of medicine in Heidelberg and personal physician to Elector Friedrich IV. of the Palatinate and Agatha Pallandt from Weisweiler near Aachen.
Live and act
After studying medicine at the Universities of Paris , Padua and Basel , Peter de Spina III received his doctorate . in 1615 in Basel and followed in 1620 in the paternal tradition a call as professor in Heidelberg. Together they saved the University Archives in Heilbronn from the capture of Heidelberg by General Tilly in 1622 in the Thirty Years' War . From Heilbronn the archive reached Frankenthal via Frankfurt am Main until Peter de Spina III. personally returned it to the elector in 1651. The celebratory speech given by Peter de Spina III. held in Heidelberg on July 19, 1651, and was printed in Frankfurt that same year.
Before the capture of Heidelberg by Tilly was Peter de Spina III. Elected rector of Heidelberg University in 1623 and then fled to Darmstadt in 1626 . Here he became the personal physician of Landgrave Georg II of Hesse-Darmstadt , but returned to Heidelberg during the Swedish occupation from 1633 to 1635. After 1635 he finally settled in Frankfurt am Main as "Physicus Primarius".
Peter de Spina III. was considered one of the most renowned doctors of his time. Prominent patients of Peter de Spina III. were among others in 1632 the exiled "Winter King" of Bohemia Friedrich V and in 1642 Count Johann Ernst von Hanau-Münzenberg-Schwarzenfels , the last count from the Hanau-Münzenberg line .
Peter de Spina III. left his nobility from Emperor Ferdinand III. 1641 confirm. After his death in 1655, his Heidelberg residence passed to his two eldest daughters Claudine Elisabeth and Agathe Agnes.

Peter de Spina III. was first married to Salome Lingelsheim (1591–1639), daughter of the Electoral Palatinate Privy Councilor Georg Michael Lingelsheim. After her death, de Spina married Susanne Catharina Cornet, with whom he had several children. His son Peter de Spina IV (1630–1689) from his first marriage was also a respected physician, as was his son, Peter de Spina V (1661–1741), who was raised to the baron class under the name of Groossenhaagen . Another son of Peter de Spina III, Johannes de Spina from his second marriage, became professor of law and also rector of Heidelberg University and a councilor .
