Yohan Cabaye (born January 14, 1986 in Tourcoing ) is a French football player . The central midfielder was most recently under contract with AS Saint-Étienne .

Career

Beginnings

Cabaye grew up in a soccer-loving family. His father was also on his way to becoming a professional soccer player, but suffered a double broken leg in the RC Lens youth academy that ended his career prematurely. As coach of FC Tourcoing , he brought his four-year-old son into their youth department, although Yohan was actually too young for that. Yohan's younger brother Geoffrey also played in Tourcoing, but did not become a professional footballer.

Lille OSC

Cabaye had played in his hometown until 1998, before the neighboring OSC Lille brought him to his youth academy. As an A-youth in the 2003/04 season he was considered in Lilles Reserveelf in the fifth division and scored a goal there in ten missions. Since the 2004/05 season he was also used in the first team in Ligue 1 and contributed to the runner-up . Since 2005 he has been part of the regular formation of the Lille OSC, for which he played a total of 191 top division games until 2011 and scored 31 goals therein; he was also used in 36 games in the European Cup . In his final season with the Northern French ( 2010/11 ), Cabaye won both the French Cup and the French Championship.

Newcastle United

For the 2011/12 season Cabaye moved to England and signed a five-year contract with Newcastle United . There he met his compatriot Hatem Ben Arfa ; in the same summer three more French players were signed with Demba Ba , Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan . Cabaye made his debut for his new club on August 13, 2011 in a 0-0 game against Arsenal . In his first season for the club from Newcastle upon Tyne , he came in the Premier League to 34 appearances and scored four goals. For the club it was enough in the league to fifth place; with this rank he took part in the play-offs for the Europa League . In the following season he played in 26 league games and scored six goals. About the play-offs Cabayes team qualified for the main competition of the Europa League , in which he played nine games.

Paris Saint-Germain

On January 29, 2014 Cabaye moved back to Ligue 1 for Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a contract valid until June 30, 2017.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace signed him on July 10, 2015 .

Al-Nasr SC

In July 2018 he moved to the United Arab Emirates for al-Nasr SC . After 12 missions, he left the club again in mid-January 2019 and moved to AS Saint-Étienne in France.

In the national team

For the French U-19 juniors , Cabaye completed nine international matches in which he scored two goals. In 2005 he became European champion in this team . Between 2006 and 2008, 15 international matches (three goals) with the U-21s followed . After the 2010 World Cup , Cabaye was part of the circle from which national coach Laurent Blanc rebuilt the national team after the Knysna fiasco . He played his first international match in August 2010 in the 2-1 defeat in Norway . Blanc nominated him for the French EM squad . There he scored his first goal for the national team in the preliminary round. He is also part of the team under Blanc's successor Didier Deschamps , in which he plays in midfield together with Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi .

At the 2016 European Football Championship in his own country, he was included in the French squad . His first appearance was only in the third group game against Switzerland, where he played over 90 minutes. He then stayed on the bench again in the further course of the tournament, only in the semifinals against Germany he was substituted on again in the final minutes. France reached the final and lost to Portugal there.

Style of play

Cabaye has a large overview of the game and can distribute balls well thanks to his technical qualities. He is also considered an excellent free-kick and penalty taker.
