Belgian League Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Belgian League Cup in football was introduced in 1975 shortly after the Pro League was founded under the name Coupe de la Ligue Pro , but was discontinued after one season. In 1985 and 1986 the competition was played again.

From 1998 to 2000 the competition was reintroduced. This time it was called Coupe de la Ligue Professionnell . In these three editions, the winner qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup .

Due to a lack of interest and problems with funding from TV revenues, the competition was discontinued in 2000. A proposal from Standard Liège in 2010 to reintroduce the competition instead of play-offs in the league was rejected by the other clubs.
