Lorenzo Jules Staelens (born April 30, 1964 in Kortrijk ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach .
Career
Staelens began his professional career in his hometown at KV Kortrijk . In 1989 he moved to Club Bruges . Here he was four times Belgian champion and three times cup winner. After nine years he moved to RSC Anderlecht in 1998 , where he was able to celebrate two more championship titles. In 2001 he let his career in the J. League with Ōita Trinita end.
Staelens played 70 times for Belgium and scored eight goals. He was part of the squad at three world championships: WM 90 , WM 94 and WM 98 .
Staelens was briefly coach at Excelsior Mouscron in the 2002/03 season , but was fired after poor results. In the 2003/04 season, Eendracht Aalst hired him as head coach. After two months he quit because of problems with the club president. From 2013 to October 2014 he was the head coach at Cercle Bruges , after replacing the previous coach Foeke Booy . After the club fell to penultimate place after several defeats in the 2014/15 season , Staelens was dismissed.
In October 2015 he signed a coaching contract with OMS Ingelmunster, a club in the fourth-highest Belgian division. But after a lost game, Staelens informed the club that he was not available for the task.
In January 2016 he was hired by the then second-rate club Royal Excel Mouscron as an assistant coach under Glen de Boeck for the goal of promotion. When de Boeck was released in December 2016, Staelens was also released. He was then to be employed as the Talent Development Coordinator at Excel Mouscron, but this too ended in mid-January 2017.
In November 2018 he was hired again as assistant coach under Glen de Boeck, this time from KV Kortrijk . While De Boeck's contract was extended by Kortrijk after the season, this was not the case with Staelens.
In November 2018 Staelens became a trainer at FC Knokke. At that time, he was in last place in the highest Belgian amateur league. However, since the club was still in last place in March 2019, had not won since January 2019 and relegation could no longer be avoided, it was agreed to cancel the contract.
