Henri Thellin

Henri Thellin (born August 27, 1931 in Duisburg , † September 16, 2006 in Saint-Barthélemy ) was a Belgian football player .

Athletic career

Thellin was promoted to the Standard Liège team in 1949 , and in the same year he won the bronze medal with the Belgian U-18 team at the UEFA youth tournament . At his club he quickly became a regular player on the left side of defense and midfield and played 411 championship games for the club by the end of his career in 1965. His most successful times were the years between 1958 and 1963, when he won the league title three times with the club, took over the position of team captain from Jean Mathonet in 1959 and was also appointed to the Belgian national team. Between 1958 and 1961 he played a total of 16 international matches , but remained without a goal. In the 1961/62 European Cup , he reached the semi-finals with the team alongside players like Léon Semmeling , Roger Claessen , Denis Houf , Paul Bonga Bonga and István Sztani , in which they failed after two defeats at Real Madrid .

Thellin died after a long illness shortly after his 75th birthday in the late summer of 2006 in the Lesser Antilles , where he had lived for several years.
