Vitória Guimarães , official name "Vitória Sport Clube", is a sports club in Guimarães . The club is known for its soccer team , which plays in the Primeira Liga (1st Portuguese Soccer League). The club was founded as a football club in 1918 by a group of students, then registered as an official club in the Braga Football Association in 1922 . The stadium was named Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques after the first king of Portugal . It offers space for around 30,000 spectators and was the venue for the 2004 European Football Championship . According to the club's colors, the home shirt is white and the away shirt is black. The local fans affectionately call the team only "Vitória".

In addition to football, the Vitória also offers the following sports: volleyball , basketball , swimming , water polo , table tennis , futsal , judo , karate , kickboxing and athletics .

history

Although Vitória won the Portuguese Cup only once, the club was one of the most established clubs in Portugal, having mostly played for the UEFA Cup places over the past 20 years. The club's most successful placement in the first Portuguese league was third place, which has already been achieved four times. In Portugal's all-time table, Vitória takes fifth place , behind Benfica Lisbon , FC Porto , Sporting Lisbon and Belenenses Lisbon .

In 1988 Vitória defeated FC Porto in the final of the Portuguese Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira 2-0, which was their first national triumph. In the 2005/06 season , the club rose for the first time in 48 years in the Liga de Honra , the second Portuguese league, which was renamed Liga Vitalis from. But already in the following season, 2006/07 , Vitória managed to immediately rise again. In the 2007/08 season , Vitória sensationally achieved third place as a climber and thus participation in the Champions League qualification.

In recent years certain Vitória games have become a cauldron. In the first place is the local derby against Sporting Braga , the so-called Derby Minhoto , since Guimarães belongs to the Braga district in the Minho region. But the encounters against Académica Coimbra (which are based more on historical reasons) and record champions Benfica are of great importance. Therefore, the surprising cup success 2012/13 against Benfica Lisbon was celebrated very effusively. The 2-1 victory over the actually overpowering opponent Benfica Lisbon was by far the greatest success in the club's history.

European Cup balance sheet

In European competitions, Vitória was represented eleven times in the UEFA Cup and once in the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the UEFA Cup, Vitória played against clubs such as FC Barcelona , Ajax Amsterdam , Lazio Rome , FC Parma , Atlético Madrid , Borussia Mönchengladbach and Sparta Prague .

In the 2004/05 season managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup by Vitória completed the season in fifth. It was the first UEFA Cup qualification in seven years. From 1995 to 1999 Vitória managed to take part in the UEFA Cup four times in a row.

In August 2008 Vitória played against the Swiss champions FC Basel , qualifying for the Champions League for the first time . After a 0-0 win in Guimarães, Vitória lost 2-1 in Basel and was eliminated. In the UEFA Cup, Vitória was eliminated in the first round by Portsmouth FC .
