Career

Player career

The Portuguese began his football career in 1972 with Varzim SC . In his professional football career, he mainly played for Spanish and Portuguese clubs, but for a year he played for the French club Paris Saint-Germain . In 1985 he ended his playing career at Boavista Porto after a total of seven club changes. Alves celebrated the greatest success of his career at Benfica Lisbon , where he won twice the championship and twice the cup within three seasons.

Between 1974 and 1983 he played a total of 36 games for the national team.

Coaching career

His coaching career was not crowned with great success between 1984 and 2004, the only triumph that João Alves could record was the cup win with CF Estrela Amadora in the 1989/90 season. In these 20 years he changed clubs 13 times. Alone with Boavista Porto and CF Estrela Amadora he was under contract three times as a coach. After 2004 he "paused" his coaching career, where he had worked exclusively for clubs from Portugal up to that point. In 2009, Iranian businessman Majid Pishyar , the owner of Servette FC Genève at the time , hired Alves as head coach. In the 2010/11 season Alves made it to the top Swiss league with Servette.
