René Hauss (born December 25, 1927 in Strasbourg , † December 6, 2010 ) was a French football player and coach .

biography

René Hauss was with Racing Strasbourg throughout his playing career from 1948 to 1967 . With 515 appearances, 421 of them in Division 1 , the defender became the club's record player.

In May 1951 he won with Racing in the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir in Colombes before about 61,000 spectators with a 3: 0 victory over US Valenciennes the French Cup in 1951 . At the Cup 1965/66 he was again in the final with Racing Strasbourg and led the team as team captain with a 1-0 victory over FC Nantes in May 1966 in the Paris Prinzenparkstadion in front of 36,000 spectators to another title win.

After finishing his playing career he was coach of the club in May 1967 and stayed there until March 1968. He was then coach of Standard Liège from 1969 to 1973 and was with this team in 1969, 1970 and 1971 champions of Belgium .

After leaving Liège, he was from 1973 to 1985 first as a coach and later as general manager at FC Sochaux , which was only eliminated in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup in the semi-finals after results of 1: 1 and 2: 3 against AZ Alkmaar . In 1980 he was named French football coach of the year together with Jean Vincent . Most recently he was sports manager between 1985 and 1990 and also coach of RC Paris from 1988 to 1989 .

Shortly before his 83rd birthday, he succumbed to cancer . Just a few days earlier, he had taken on his role as a member of the jury for the 2010 soccer coach of the year election. He was buried in Holtzheim in his Alsatian homeland.
