Aleksandar Janković ( Serbian Александар Јанковић; born May 6, 1972 in Belgrade ) is a former Serbian football player and today's coach .
Player career
As a player, Janković moved from the youth division of FK Red Star Belgrade to the Bonnyrigg White Eagles in Australia. He then played in France for AS Cherbourg and FC Pau . At Pau he played for the first time under his later coaching colleague Slavoljub Muslin . At the age of 28 he had to end his career with the Kansas City Wizards because of a serious knee injury .
Coaching career
Until his first head coaching position, Janković was always the assistant coach of Slavoljub Muslin. He first followed him to his youth club FK Red Star Belgrade , where he won the championship twice and the cup once. At Levski Sofia both could win the national double. After Belgrade had two less successful seasons, they signed the coaching team again and the club won the championship again. Janković also worked as Muslin's assistant trainer at Metalurh Donetsk , SC Lokeren and Lokomotiv Moscow . On July 3, 2007, the Serb was initially scout of FK Red Star Belgrade and only a few months later he took over the post of head coach from the dismissed Milorad Kosanović. After the 2007/08 season, Red Star could not win a national title again and Janković was replaced by the Czech Zdeněk Zeman . From April to October 2009 he coached the Belgian first division club SC Lokeren , where he already worked twice as an assistant coach.
In November 2010 Janković took over the coaching position for the Serbian U-21 national team . Many later professional players played in the team such as B. Matija Nastasić , Slobodan Medojević or Miloš Jojić . Despite 18 points from eight games and the sovereign group victory, he failed with the team in the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship 2013 in the decisive play-off games with two 0-1 defeats against England . After the resignation of Robert Prosinečki , Janković was again coach at Red Star Belgrade on August 21, 2012. But just like his predecessor, he could not prevent the successful streak of local rivals FK Partizan Belgrade and their sixth championship title in a row. Before the end of the season he was replaced in March 2013 by the Portuguese Ricardo Sá Pinto .
After a break, Janković returned to Belgium in May 2014 and became a coach at the first division club KV Mechelen . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he was hired by league rival Standard Liège as a coach. Before the end of the season, he was released after two points from three games during the play-off phase. After Yannick Ferrera, originally Janković's successor, was dismissed from Mechelen in October 2017, the Serb took over the club's coaching position again a week later. After just ten points from ten games, he was dismissed in January 2018.
In September 2018, Janković went to the Chinese Football Association and became part of the renowned coaching staff around Marcello Lippi (men) and Guus Hiddink (U-21). The Serb is the coach of the newly formed B-selection of the U-20 national team .
