Domenico Criscito (born December 30, 1986 in Cercola , Province of Naples , Italy ) is an Italian football player .

Career

In the club

Domenico Criscito comes from the youth section of Genoa , already in the 2002/03 season he made his debut for the first team in the series B .

In 2004, Juventus Turin secured half of its transfer rights for 1.9 million euros . At Juve he played in the youth team Primavera and took a very promising development. In the 2005/06 season he already trained with the professional team.

For the 2006/07 season Criscito went back to Genoa and was able to convince his trainer Gian Piero Gasperini with good performances in the preparation for the season . As a result, he became a regular in defense of the Serie B club. Due to its good performance, Turin finally decided in January 2007 to buy Genoa its 50% of the transfer rights to Criscito. The price negotiated was 7.5 million euros, with Juventus paying 5.25 million and continuing to cede its transfer rights to Andrea Masiello and Abdoulay Konko to Genoa. Criscito signed a contract with Juve until June 30, 2011, but played for Genoa until the end of the season and made it to Serie A with the club .

For the 2007/08 season he returned to Juventus and was, also because of the injuries of Jorge Andrade and Jean-Alain Boumsong , a regular at the beginning of the season. After some mistakes, often due to his inexperience, Criscito had to take severe criticism from the media and was often not nominated for the starting lineup by coach Claudio Ranieri in the further course of the first half series. In January 2008 he returned to Genoa on loan for the rest of the season and was a regular there for the rest of the season.

In the summer of 2008 Genoa bought half of Criscito's transfer rights from Juventus, and a purchase option was also agreed. After two seasons as a regular in the team trained by Gian Piero Gasperini and ranks fifth and ninth in Serie A, Criscito finally moved to CFC Genoa in June 2010 for six million euros.

In July 2011 he moved abroad and signed with Zenit Saint Petersburg . With the UEFA Cup winner in 2008, trained by compatriot Luciano Spalletti , he received a five-year contract and cost around twelve million euros. After 151 games, in 7 years he left Russia in the summer of 2018 and returned to Italy. Criscito signed for the Genoa CFC on June 6, 2018 , who then gave him the number 4 on his back in early July 2018 and made him team captain.

In the national team

Criscito has played in all youth national teams in his country since the U-17 and completed 45 junior international matches . For the Italian U-21 national team he made his debut on November 14, 2006 in a friendly against the U-21 selection of the Czech Republic .

On August 12, 2009, Criscito made his debut under Marcello Lippi in a 0-0 friendly match against Switzerland in Basel in the Italian national team . As a result, he was also nominated by Lippi in the Italian squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . The defender played all three games, but retired with the Azzurri in the preliminary round as the bottom of the group.

Criscito was used regularly until the beginning of 2012. After that, he was only sporadically part of the squad and only played four games from 2012 to 2014. After an abstinence, he returned to the squad in 2016, but without playing. 2018 was nominated again by Roberto Mancini and played four more games for Italy. His last assignment was in October 2018 and has not been nominated since then.

Suspicion of match fixing

In connection with a betting scandal in Italian football, an investigation was initiated against Criscito at the end of May 2012 on suspicion of match-fixing. After the search of the Italian national team's training base in Coverciano , where they were preparing for the European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine, the Italian Football Association announced that it would not nominate Criscito for the European Championship.
