Gilberto Martínez Vidal (born October 1, 1979 in Golfito ) is a Costa Rican soccer player who has been under contract with US Lecce since the 2013/14 season .

Career

Gilberto Martínez Vidal began his career in the youth of Deportivo Saprissa . He played in the 1999 Junior World Cup in Nigeria . After performing well in the club and in the youth, he quickly became a fan favorite and was appointed to the national team. On September 15, 2002 he moved to Italy to Brescia Calcio . There he became the mainstay of the defense. After an ankle injury, he was awarded to AS Roma in 2006 . But during his time there, he never got back to his old form and did not play a single game for the Roma during the loan period . In Brescia he made his comeback, but they went into the series B from. But he decided to stay with Brescia despite the second division.

After a year without a club, he joined the US Lecce in the summer of 2013 .

National team

Martínez made his international debut on July 14, 2001 at the Copa America in a 1-0 win over Honduras . He participated with his national team in the soccer world championship 2002 and also in the soccer world championship 2006 . So far, he has played 60 international matches, but without scoring.
