John Boyle, 15th Earl of Cork, 15th Earl of Orrery (born November 3, 1945 ), is a British peer and member of the House of Lords .

Life

He is the eldest son of John William Boyle, 14th Earl of Cork from his marriage to Mary Leslie Gordon-Finlayson. As an apparent marriage of his father, he carried the courtesy title Viscount Dungarvan from 1995 .

He was educated at Harrow and then attended the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth . After training as a naval officer, he served in the Royal Navy , where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander . In 1976 he became the commander of the submarine HMS Sealion . After completing his military service, he became a member of the Baltic Exchange in 1979 .

Boyle has been married to Rebecca Juliet Noble since June 2, 1973, with whom he has a son and two daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

When his father died on November 14, 2003 he inherited his Irish nobility titles as 15th Earl of Cork , 15th Earl of Orrery , 16th Viscount Dungarvan , 15th Viscount Boyle , 15th Baron Boyle of Bandon Bridge , 15th Baron Boyle of Youghal , 15th Baron Boyle of Broghill , and his British nobility title as 12th Baron Boyle of Marston .

Since the House of Lords Act 1999 , no hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with his nobility titles. Instead, Boyle was eligible to run as a by-election candidate for the 90 remaining seats in the House of Lords, which the hereditary peers have since chosen from among their ranks. After Lord Bridges was excluded from the House of Lords in 2016 under the House of Lords Act 2014 for non-participation, John Boyle ran for the relevant by-election. He was elected to the House of Lords on July 12, 2016 and has been a crossbencher there ever since .
