The title was first created on March 20, 1664 in the Peerage of England for Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork . He had married Elizabeth Clifford, 2nd Baroness Clifford and had already been raised to Baron Clifford of Lanesborough , in the County of York on November 4, 1644 , and in 1643 he had been given the title Earl of Cork by his father in the Peerage of Ireland , Inherited Viscount Dungarvan and Baron Boyle of Youghal . In addition, he had inherited in 1642 from his younger brother Lewis Boyle (1619-1642) the title of Viscount Boyle of Kinalmeaky , which was given to him in 1628 with a special note in his favor . When the 3rd Earl of Burlington died on December 3, 1753, the Earldom of Burlington and the Barony of Clifford of Lanesborough became extinct. The remaining titles went to his third cousin, John Boyle , who was already 5th Earl of Orrery .

In the second bestowal, the title was recreated on September 10, 1831 for Lord George Cavendish , along with the subordinate title Baron Cavendish of Keighley , of Keighley in the County of York. He was the youngest son of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Charlotte Boyle, daughter of the last earl of the first bestowal. His grandson and heir, the 2nd Earl, also inherited the title Duke of Devonshire in 1858 , along with the subordinate titles Marquess of Hartington , Earl of Devonshire and Baron Cavendish of Hardwick . The Earldom of Burlington has since been a subordinate title of the respective Dukes of Devonshire.
