Earl of Granard is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award

The title was created on December 30, 1684 for the Scottish military Arthur Forbes, 1st Viscount of Granard . He was a great-great-great-grandson of a younger son of the 2nd Lord Forbes of the Forbes clan . He had already been awarded the Viscount of Granard and Baron Clanehugh , subordinate to him on November 22, 1675, also in the Peerage of Ireland . He had also inherited the title of Baronet , of Castle Forbes in the County of Longford , from his father as early as 1632 , which was given to him on September 29, 1628 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia.

The later 3rd Earl was appointed to the Irish House of Lords on February 27, 1724 by Writ of Acceleration and thereby bestowed on him the hereditary title Baron Forbes in the Peerage of Ireland.

His descendant, the 6th Earl, was also given the title Baron Granard , of Castle Donington in the County of Leicester , on February 24, 1806 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . In contrast to the Irish titles, this was associated with a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 .
