Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on December 29, 1800 for Charles Loftus, 1st Earl of Ely .

On January 19, 1801 he was also promoted to Baron Loftus , of Long Loftus in the County of York . This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 .
