Viscount Loftus

Viscount Loftus , of Ely in the County of Wicklow , is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded three times in the Peerage of Ireland .

The historic family seat of the Viscounts was Loftus Hall near Hook in County Wexford, Ireland .

Awards

The title was first awarded to the Lord Chancellor of Ireland Sir Adam Loftus on May 10, 1622 . The title expired on the death of his grandson, the 3rd Viscount, on November 6, 1725.

In the second award, the title was created on July 19, 1756 for the former MP in the Irish House of Commons Nicholas Loftus, 1st Baron Loftus . This had already been awarded the title Baron Loftus , of Loftus Hall in the County of Wexford on November 5, 1751 . His older son, the 2nd Viscount, was made Earl of Ely on October 23, 1766 . The latter title expired on the death of his son, the 2nd Earl and 3rd Viscount on November 12, 1769. The Viscountcy and Barony fell to the younger son of the 1st Viscount, who on December 2, 1771 the title Earl of Ely was newly awarded has been. All of his titles eventually expired on his death on May 8, 1783.

In the third award, the title was created on December 28, 1789 for Charles Loftus, 1st Baron Loftus . He was the son of a daughter of the 1st Viscount's second bestowal. He had already been raised to Baron Loftus , of Loftus Hall in the County of Wexford, on June 28, 1785 , and had the title of Baronet , of Tottenham Green in the on December 29, 1786 by his father Sir John Tottenham, 1st Baronet County of Wexford, which was bestowed on December 18, 1780 in the Baronage of Ireland. On March 2, 1794, he was also elevated to Earl of Ely and on December 29, 1800 to Marquess of Ely . On January 19, 1801 he was also promoted to Baron Loftus , of Long Loftus in the County of York . This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 .
