The synagogue in Butzbach , a town in the Wetterau district in Hesse , was built in 1926 and burned down in 1938. The synagogue stood between Wetzlarerstrasse and Ludwigsstrasse.

history

A synagogue building was approved as early as 1881, but this was not carried out. In 1920 the Jewish community of Butzbach wanted to make a new attempt to build synagogues and tried to raise part of the necessary money by appealing for donations. By inflation , the start of construction was delayed. The foundation stone was laid on April 14, 1926 and the ceremonial inauguration took place on August 20, 1926 by the provincial rabbi Leo Jehuda Hirschfeld from Gießen .

The synagogue was a polygonal central building with 120 seats, which was built according to plans by the architect Lippert from Butzbach. In the same year, Lippert also built the synagogue in Pohl-Göns .

time of the nationalsocialism

The synagogue was burned down during the November pogrom in 1938 . The fire brigade only protected the neighboring houses and a paint factory nearby.

Commemoration

A memorial stone was erected on November 9, 1981 at the synagogue site. It bears the following inscription: “The synagogue of the former Jewish community of Butzbach was located here. Built in 1926, burned down during the Nazi tyranny on November 9, 1938. On the same day, the synagogues in the districts of Griedel, Nieder-Weisel and Pohl-Göns were destroyed. This began the expulsion and extermination of our Jewish fellow citizens. We let ourselves be reminded by this event: Our people must never again allow terror against people. Shalom - peace. "
