Leo Jehuda Hirschfeld

Leo Jehuda Hirschfeld ( May 28, 1867 in Posen - September 20, 1933 in Gießen ) was provincial rabbi in Gießen.

Life

Leo Hirschfeld was the grandson of Rabbi Salomon Plessner (1797–1883) and brother-in-law of Elias Plessner (1841–1898), a German philosopher and rabbi. His brother Hartwig Hirschfeld (1854–1934) was a well-known orientalist .

After graduating from high school in 1887, Leo Hirschfeld studied at the rabbinical seminary in Berlin and at the same time at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He was then the second rabbi in Ostrowo and Rogasen between 1890 and 1895 . On April 28, 1893 Leo Hirschfeld received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg .

From April 1895 Leo Hirschfeld became provincial rabbi for Upper Hesse, responsible for the Orthodox rural communities. He held this position until his death in 1933. For example, he was present at the inauguration of the synagogues in Pohl-Göns , Butzbach and Lauterbach .
