history

At the end of the 19th century there was a first synagogue in the back yard of the house at Am lower Graben 21 . In 1906 the larger Jewish community in Lauterbach bought a piece of land to build a new synagogue. The architect Jacob Reuter from Lauterbach designed a building in the typical Art Nouveau style with oriental details. On August 14, 1908, the new synagogue was inaugurated by the provincial rabbi Leo Jehuda Hirschfeld from Gießen . There were 100 male and 74 female seats in the synagogue.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom of 1938 , the synagogue was devastated on November 8, 1938, the windows were broken and the furniture smashed. On the evening of November 10th, the building was destroyed by arson and in 1942 the ruin was demolished.

Commemoration

The site of the former synagogue was not rebuilt. A memorial plaque was put up as a reminder. After excavations on the property in summer 2011, which revealed remains of the foundations of the synagogue's cellar, a private car park was created in September 2012.
