Former synagogue in Ulrichstein

The synagogue in Ulrichstein , a small town in the Vogelsberg district in central Hesse , was set up in a farmhouse built in 1847 in the 1860s. The derelict synagogue at Herrengartenstrasse 7 (former Untergasse) is a protected cultural monument .

History and description

In the area of today's large barn door, the men entered the east-facing prayer room with a women's gallery . A staircase in the entrance hall led to the gallery. On the west side of the building was a classroom and above it was the teacher's apartment.

A major renovation of the building was carried out in 1893: the doors and windows were replaced, the walls repaired and painted and new benches made.

On September 12, 1938, the synagogue building was sold in connection with the dissolution of the Jewish community.

After 1945 the synagogue building was converted into a residential building with a barn. In the early 1980s, a stone tablet was found in the building with the names of the Jewish soldiers of the community who died in World War I.

Commemoration

On the building there is a smaller and a larger plaque with references to the former synagogue.
